My Swedish Sojourn

2024 was one of the coldest years in recent decades in the Nordic region. After exploring several countries in Europe, we decided to experience the Nordic chill. We quickly planned a visit to two of the most beautiful Nordic countries - Sweden and Denmark. We began our journey in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. They also call themselves the capital of Scandinavia.
We booked an early morning flight from Luxembourg, and even before landing, we could see the city covered with snow. As we landed in snow-covered Stockholm, excitement and fear gripped us simultaneously. Little did I know how unforgivingly cold Sweden was going to be, yet it fascinated us with its charms. Let me share a couple of things that left a lasting impression on my heart from the trip.

Stockholm Winter Chronicles
A Chilly Welcome
Upon our arrival in the city, we were pleasantly surprised to find the weather better than expected. Though cold, we were well-prepared for the conditions. As we strolled along, we noticed streets covered in snow from the previous night, with cleaners working tirelessly to make them clean and safe.

However, despite their efforts, many footpaths remained covered in ice, with black ice posing a particular threat due to its slipperiness. We had to tread cautiously and remain vigilant.

Thanks to my proper clothing and snow boots, I was able to fully immerse myself in the snow-covered beauty of Stockholm. The charming cobblestone streets and striking architecture added an extra touch to the experience. Our hotel's convenient location in the city center made exploration easy, whether on foot or using public transportation.

Stockholm Central Library
After spending time in the chilly weather, we felt the need to take a break and warm up. So, we headed to the Stockholm Central Library. Personally, I'm a big fan of libraries; there's something about being surrounded by books that brings me joy, even if they're written in a foreign language.

Walking into the Stockholm Central Library had an immediate positive impact on my mood. The circular layout and soft lighting created a comfortable and soothing atmosphere, making it a perfect place to escape the winter cold and unwind.

Vasa Museum
Our next stop was the Vasa Museum, and as we made our way, we couldn't resist pausing here and there near various landmarks to capture the charms of Stockholm's streets.

The Vasa Museum in Stockholm is a unique gem, home to the Vasa ship that tragically sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. After spending an astonishing 333 years underwater, the ship was salvaged and now stands proudly in the museum.

It's truly astonishing that the Vasa ship managed to survive an incredible 333 years underwater after its ill-fated maiden voyage in the Baltic Sea. The Vasa's ability to withstand the underwater environment for such an extended period adds a remarkable layer to its historical significance, making it a captivating testament to the mysteries and wonders of the sea.

Originally, the ship was very colorful, and recent analyses have revealed traces of its vibrant paintwork, providing a captivating glimpse into its former grandeur.

The architectural beauty of the museum itself is notable, with its spacious halls showcasing the magnificently preserved Vasa ship. Adorned with intricate carvings and a towering presence, the ship tells a compelling tale of 17th-century maritime history.

Stockholm Permanent Ice Bar
Our next stop was the Stockholm Ice Bar, a place that stays icy all year round. When we walked in, we were pleasantly surprised to see that everything was made of clear ice – even the drinking glasses! The bar was like a frozen art gallery with beautiful ice sculptures all around. It was cold inside, way below freezing. Though they gave us warm clothes to wear, we were literally struggling to keep ourselves warm. We could feel the numbness in our hands despite wearing gloves.

Sipping our drinks from the ice-made glasses was a really cool experience, making the Stockholm Ice Bar a fun and chilly part of our Nordic adventure. Everyone in the bar relished this unique and fascinating experience.

Stockholm metro Art
The Stockholm metro is like an underground art gallery, adding a unique twist to our city exploration. It is like a huge art exhibition that stretches a whopping 110 kilometers – the longest in the world. Riding the subway feels like traveling through an exciting story where each station seemed to have its own artistic identity. The metro stations themselves became an immersive experience, with the combination of modern design and artistic expression transforming the daily commute into a visual journey. It was a delightful surprise to find such creativity beneath the bustling city streets, making Stockholm's metro a standout attraction in its own right. Spending a day in Stockholm's subway is like taking a tour of the world's longest art exhibition.

Stockholm Cathedral and Royal Palace
Gamla Stan, which translates to "Old Town" in Swedish, is the historic heart of Stockholm, Sweden. Gamla Stan is characterized by its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and medieval architecture. The area dates back to the 13th century and is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe. The buildings feature charming facades in various shades, and many of them house cafes, restaurants, and shops
On that chilly winter day, amidst falling snowflakes, we explored the timeless beauty of Stockholm Cathedral. The cathedral's soaring spires and intricate architecture stood in stark contrast to the soft white blanket of snow that adorned its surroundings, creating a picturesque scene.

The centerpiece of Gamla Stan is the Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet), a grand structure that dominates the skyline. Visitors can explore the palace grounds, including the outer courtyards and the changing of the guard ceremony.
The Royal Palace showcased its regal grandeur against the winter landscape, providing a captivating glimpse into Sweden's rich cultural heritage. The combination of snowfall and royal splendor made our visit to these landmarks an charming and memorable winter experience.

Nobel Prize Museum
Stortorget, the main square in Gamla Stan, is surrounded by well-preserved buildings and is a hub of activity. This square is also home to the Nobel Museum, which provides insights into the Nobel Prize and its laureates.

With snow gently falling, I eagerly set out to visit the Nobel Prize Museum, a destination I had long yearned to explore. To my disappointment, it was closed, denying me the chance to step inside.

Nevertheless, the surrounding ambiance, with people gracefully maneuvering through the cold and snow, contributed to the enchantment of the experience. Despite the closure, I spent time in admiring the vibrant buildings and lively atmosphere in the vicinity.

As the snowfall intensified, we seized the moment to capture some pictures, turning what initially seemed like a setback into one of the most memorable days of my life.

Mariaberget Viewing Point
At Mariaberget Viewing Point, we enjoyed an amazing view of Stockholm, the archipelago, and a frozen lake or river below. Set on a scenic hill, the place had a lovely snowy landscape and a crisp winter feel. People were casually walking and ice skating on the frozen surface, making it a unique and memorable experience. Mariaberget wasn't just a viewing spot; it was like entering a winter wonderland with a perfect mix of city sights and natural beauty. Our visit there was truly special, leaving us with fantastic memories.

Fika and Meatballs
In Sweden, where meatballs are a renowned delicacy, we discovered a charming restaurant to indulge in the country's famous dish. Ordering four distinct types of meatballs, each bursting with unique flavors, we relished every bite, savoring the rich culinary tapestry of Sweden.

The next morning, our hotel's breakfast buffet surpassed expectations, introducing us to Fika, a cherished Swedish tradition involving coffee and pastries, setting a delightful tone for the day.

When we were completely tired and cold from the unforgiving temperature and formidable snow, we found ourselves in a cozy restaurant that offered warmth and comfort, while the flavorful lentil soup left us satisfied and full.

Leisurely Winter Walks
Leisurely walks are my favorite way to explore any city, allowing us to slowly absorb everything it has to offer. Stockholm, in particular, unfolded numerous pleasant surprises during these strolls. From its enchanting cobblestone streets to charming buildings, the city presented a diverse array of soul-nourishing moments. Unlike other European cities I have visited, people in Stockholm exhibited excellent English proficiency and were incredibly helpful, enhancing the overall warmth of the experience.

Goodbye Stockholm
As we say our goodbyes to Stockholm, we carry not only cherished memories but also the warmth of a city that exceeded our winter dreams. Goodbye, Stockholm – you truly made us happy! Now, with anticipation, we set our sights on the next leg of this remarkable journey. We are going to another beautiful city of Sweden- Malmo.

Malmo Memories
Leaving Stockholm brought a mix of emotions, a blend of nostalgia and the excitement of reuniting with a dear college friend after 14 long years. The train journey to Malmo felt like a bridge to cherished memories. Arriving in Malmo, my joy soared as my friend was already waiting at the station with his car, ready to receive us. At his home, my friend, his wife, and their sweet 4-year-old son greeted us with open arms, setting the stage for a heartwarming reunion.

The warmth extended to the dinner table, where we indulged in mouthwatering homemade Bangladeshi delicacies throughout the stay. The culinary journey felt endless, and each dish became a part of our shared happiness.

Together, we explored few beautiful places in Malmo. Despite the strong wind and freezing temperatures, we covered many of the iconic spots, a day filled with fun, sarcasm, and countless photographs.

However, the highlight of the trip was the late-night conversations where we reminisced about our college days, reliving the moments from the good old classrooms of Dhaka City College. Soon, the conversation delved into deeper topics of life. Those shared moments of joy served as a reminder that our friendship had stood the test of time.
Farewell Sweden
As we bid goodbye and headed towards Copenhagen, Denmark, the memories we carried with us were destined to stay with us forever. The Sweden trip will always hold a special place for so many reasons. From experiencing my first Nordic winter to reconnecting with my college friend after years, it has truly become one of my most memorable journeys. Until we meet again, goodbye Sweden!
