Luxembourg: My Life in the Richest Country in the World

Moving from Bangladesh to Luxembourg was a life-changing experience for me. It was my first time living permanently outside my home country, and suddenly finding myself in the wealthiest nation in the world completely turned my life around. When we think about the richest countries, we often imagine busy cities, towering skyscrapers, and people solely focused on their ambitious careers. But I found Luxembourg a bit different. Yes, it's the richest country in the world per capita, but what struck me the most was how the people celebrate and appreciate life here. Luxembourg is not just about fancy cars and millionaires; it's about finding peace and joy in everyday moments.
Before coming here, I thought ambition could be only related to one's professional career. To be honest, that's what led me to this exceptional city. However, after living here since 2022, I realized that Luxembourg inspired me to be ambitious about my life experience and inner discovery. It awakened a new ambition within me for my personal well-being, passions, and values. I reignited my love for travelling, became an avid reader, and developed a passion for philosophy and psychology. With these reflections, it's clear that I am positively biased towards Luxembourg. Hence, I want to emphasize that this write-up is not intended as an invitation for you to relocate to Luxembourg. It is simply a personal account of my experiences and should not be considered a comprehensive guide. I apologize in advance for the unnecessary level of detail at times. However, I wanted to preserve it as a personal memory of Luxembourg. And, when it comes to something personal, our brain often assigns greater significance to even the smallest of things. Without any further ado, let's dive in.
Luxembourg in a Nutshell
Situated between its larger European neighbors- France, Belgium, and Germany- lies the wonderland known as Luxembourg. Luxembourg has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It has been influenced by various cultures and civilizations throughout the centuries. The country gained independence in the 19th century and has since developed into a modern nation.

Standard of living is very high here in Luxembourg. According to my opinion, the high standard of living in Luxembourg can be attributed to various factors. Firstly, Luxembourg has a strong and stable economy, with a highest GDP per capita in the world and low unemployment rates. The country has a thriving financial sector, attracting international businesses and creating job opportunities. Additionally, Luxembourg invests heavily in education, healthcare, and social welfare, ensuring access to quality services for its residents. The favorable work-life balance, excellent healthcare system, and low crime rates contribute to a high quality of life. Furthermore, the government's focus on sustainable development, environmental preservation, and cultural enrichment enhances the overall well-being of its citizens. Let me point out couple of things about the country I enjoy most.
A Melting Pot of Architecture, History, and Culture
I take great pleasure in exploring Luxembourg's architectural, cultural, and historical landmarks. This is especially true during the summer when the days are longer. The sun sets around 10 PM, granting me 4-5 hours of daylight even after finishing my office work. It's the perfect opportunity to delve into the rich heritage of the country.
Luxembourg is renowned for its captivating architectural beauty, blending a harmonious mix of historic and modern designs. The UNESCO-listed Old Town, known as the Grund, boasts charming medieval architecture with narrow streets, timbered houses, and picturesque squares. The iconic Casemates du Bock, a network of underground tunnels and fortifications, is a testament to the city's defensive past.

The word "Luxembourg" is believed to have originated from the Old High German words "lutz" and "burg," meaning "small castle" or "little fortress." The presence of numerous castles in Luxembourg truly embodies its name. Among them, Vianden Castle stands out with its captivating beauty, drawing admiration from all who visit.

There is another renowned location in Luxembourg often referred to as the "Balcony of Europe." It is known as Le Chemin de la Corniche, a promenade located along the old fortifications of Luxembourg City. This elevated walkway provides breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque Alzette Valley and the charming Grund district. I frequently stroll along this path to enjoy the breathtaking beauty.

Many people are unaware that The Schengen Treaty was signed in a little village called Schengen, located in Luxembourg, back in 1985. This treaty established the Schengen Area, enabling borderless travel among participating countries. The village of Schengen carries historical significance as the birthplace of this treaty, serving as a reminder of the seamless travel experience it provides to those with a Schengen visa. A visit to Schengen offers the opportunity to learn about this influential agreement while exploring the village's charm and picturesque surroundings.

Even a leisurely stroll through the streets of Luxembourg is a refreshing experience. The clean streets, medieval architecture, and safe surroundings create a soothing ambiance that rejuvenates the senses.

Luxembourg has truly ignited my passion for reading in countless ways. The people I've encountered, the environment I've experienced—it all forms a cohesive ecosystem that inspires and nurtures my love for books. The National Library in Luxembourg is a marvel, with modern architecture, top-notch facilities, and a serene and peaceful atmosphere that beckons you to immerse yourself in reading. The extensive collection of books available, both in digital and physical formats, offers a wealth of knowledge and imagination at your fingertips. Visiting the National Library (National Bibliothèque) is always an absolute delight for me.

Apart from the modern high-tech library, Luxembourg also has numerous small booths-like libraries scattered throughout the random streets. These charming little book nooks provide an unexpected delight for passersby, allowing them to take books and indulge in reading on the go. Encountering these street libraries for the first time brought me immense joy.

Next in line, we have the Philharmonie Luxembourg, a concert hall renowned for its world-class acoustics. It hosts a variety of musical performances, including classical, jazz, and contemporary music. The hall's remarkable architecture and design make it a visual masterpiece that harmonizes with its surroundings.

Another place that deserves a special mention is the Luxembourg Theater, a renowned venue known for captivating performances in an elegant setting. It offers a diverse range of productions that leave a lasting impression with their drama and artistic expression.

The European Parliament in Luxembourg serves as one of the three official seats of the European Parliament, alongside Brussels and Strasbourg. It's a testament to the spirit of European unity and cooperation, fostering dialogue and decision-making on a wide range of issues.

The university campus in Luxembourg provides a refreshing environment with its modern design. Whenever I visit the campus, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia.

Luxembourg's commitment to architectural beauty extends even to the smallest details, such as foot overbridges and narrow streets.

My bank recently offered me a nice gift: attending a private screening of the movie Indiana Jones at Kinepolis, a renowned cinema complex known for its advanced facilities and immersive movie experiences. It offers a wide range of films from different genres, catering to all movie lovers. Kinepolis is a popular destination for film enthusiasts seeking quality entertainment in a stylish setting. Attending that private screening of the movie was a good experience for me.

A Symphony of Nature and Urban Splendor
The lush greenery of Luxembourg is truly awe-inspiring. No matter where you reside in the city, a mere 10-minute walk will lead you to immerse yourself in nature's embrace. This delightful surprise has exceeded my expectations, thanks to the government's unwavering commitment to environmental conservation. Whenever I yearn for a respite from my daily routine, Luxembourg never fails to astound me with its bountiful green spaces.

With over one-third of its land covered in forests, the country offers abundant opportunities to reconnect with nature. From expansive parks and gardens to picturesque hiking trails, Luxembourg warmly embraces its green heritage, providing a revitalizing escape from urban life. Moreover, the country's steadfast dedication to sustainability and promotion of eco-friendly practices further exemplifies its commitment to preserving the beauty and importance of being green.

So next time if you don't find me at home, you may discover me seeking solitude in the enchanting forests or simply relaxing under a tree in the nearby park, engrossed in a captivating book. And I'm not alone in this pursuit; everyone around me is taking a moment to embrace life's simple pleasures. We all have our own unique ways of finding refuge of soul and celebrating the beauty of existence. For me, it lies in nurturing the embrace of nature, and my admiration for Luxembourg's natural splendor knows no bounds.

I'm constantly amazed by the pristine condition and safety of public parks. The newly built "Park Ban de Gasperich" near Cloche d'Or shopping mall is a testament to this. Its vast size and top-notch amenities leave me in awe. Whether I want to enjoy solitude, go for a leisurely walk, or unwind on a cozy wooden deck chair, this park has it all. It's a haven of tranquility and convenience.

Whether you have kids or not, Luxembourg's parks have something for everyone. From exciting playgrounds with slides and swings to sports fields and picnic areas, these parks offer endless opportunities for fun and relaxation. Take a stroll along the walking paths, explore the wonders of nature, or challenge yourself at the fitness stations. And don't forget the event spaces where you can join in on community activities and celebrations. With amenities like restrooms and drinking fountains, these parks cater to the needs of both young and old. So unleash your inner child and immerse yourself in the joy and excitement that Luxembourg's parks have to offer.

One of the many delights of living in Luxembourg is the abundance of top-notch swimming pools scattered throughout the communities. These state-of-the-art facilities provide a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation. Whether you seek a refreshing swim, a blissful sauna session, or water activities, Luxembourg offers it all.

What sets them apart is not just their excellent amenities, but also their enchanting surroundings. With open-sky views and a beach-like atmosphere, you can bask in the beauty of nature while enjoying your aquatic experience. Moreover, the diverse range of food and drink options available adds to the overall appeal, ensuring a truly delightful and indulgent time. Within the property, you'll find a variety of swimming pools, each offering different sizes, depths, temperatures, facilities, and purposes. Whether you prefer the comfort of indoor pools or the natural ambiance of outdoor ones, you'll find a perfect fit. I personally prefer the refreshing experience of outdoor swimming due to it's beach-like vibe. Treating myself with a thermal bath followed by a invigorating cold shower has become a weekend gift for myself, reminding me of the beauty of life.

I have discovered another hidden gem for swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, and relaxation: the Upper Sûre Lake. Just a few kilometers outside the city, it's easily accessible by fast public transportation, making it a must-have experience. Whenever I visit, the journey itself becomes part of the joy, with lush greenery and rolling hills along the way. Every time I arrive at this beautiful lake, I feel an overwhelming sense of joy and excitement, like the child within me comes alive again. The serene beauty of the lake, combined with the relaxed atmosphere, instantly refreshes my spirit and clears my mind.

Everyone around is enjoying the sun, and I find peace in simply lying under the shade of trees, immersing myself in the goodness of nature. Doing nothing has never felt so fulfilling.

I'm absolutely in love with Luxembourg for its incredible nature, lush greenery, and peaceful atmosphere. One thing that truly stands out is the amazing air quality here. Whenever I visit bustling cities like London or Paris, my phone keeps notifying me about the declining air quality. I return to Luxembourg to breathe in the fresh air along the banks of the Mosel river.

Mother Nature continues to bestow her wonders upon Luxembourg, where even in the heart of the city, one can witness the graceful flight of birds across the sky. Such sights are a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and urban life in this remarkable city. It is a rare and precious experience, one that sets Luxembourg apart from many other urban centers.

Events and Activities Nourishing Body and Soul
Apart from its breathtaking natural beauty, Luxembourg offers a plethora of activities and events that cater to diverse interests. From captivating concerts to mesmerizing fireworks displays, enchanting Christmas markets to lively fairs, exhilarating marathons to vibrant flea markets, there is always something happening throughout the year. The people of Luxembourg wholeheartedly participate in these events, embracing the joy and excitement they bring.
The concert on National Day 2023 was an absolute blast! The atmosphere was electric, with countless people cheering, singing, dancing, and having the time of their lives. It was a celebration to remember.

Luxembourg is renowned for its legendary fireworks displays. The combination of breathtaking fireworks synchronized with harmonious music is a deadly combination that simply can't be beaten. Words fall short in capturing the awe-inspiring spectacle that unfolds before your eyes. No picture can fully do justice to the explosive beauty and the electrifying atmosphere that fills the night sky. It's an experience that must be witnessed firsthand to truly appreciate its grandeur.

I truly enjoy the Christmas market here in Luxembourg. The festive spirit comes alive with numerous large and small markets adorned with vibrant colors, enticing food, and joyful entertainment. It's a magical experience that marks the end of the year with warmth and merriment.

I immensely enjoy the grandeur of the Schueberfouer, which holds the distinction of being both the largest and oldest festival in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with a history spanning over six centuries. It's woven into the spirit of Luxembourgers and now, embraced by new residents too. The allure of its diverse offerings—ranging from delectable food to exhilarating fun, enchanting lights, and captivating music—mesmerizes me without fail. With each passing year, I eagerly await the arrival of August and the chance to immerse myself in this cherished event.

In Luxembourg, fitness is a way of life. Everywhere you look, you'll find people embracing an active lifestyle, whether it's walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming or hitting the gym. The dedication to fitness is truly inspiring and motivating. What's remarkable is that many parks are equipped with fitness facilities, including outdoor gyms and basketball courts, providing free resources for everyone to pursue their fitness goals. It's a testament to the city's commitment to promoting health and well-being.

And how can I forget about the marathons in Luxembourg? It's a true celebration of athleticism and community spirit. Whether participating or cheering from the sidelines, people come out in large numbers to be a part of this incredible event. The atmosphere is electric, with the streets filled with cheers, encouragement, and a sense of unity. The marathon is more than just a race; it's a festival that brings people together, showcasing the vibrant and supportive nature of Luxembourg.

Morning walks in Lux invigorate my spirit with its relaxing and fresh air. The serene scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere inspire me to immerse myself in nature's embrace and find tranquility.

Luxembourg offers excellent hiking facilities with diverse landscapes and picturesque trails. The renowned Mullerthal Trail, known as the "Little Switzerland of Luxembourg," takes hikers through stunning rock formations and lush valleys. Well-marked trails provide easy navigation and information about the surrounding flora, fauna, and points of interest. Luxembourg's commitment to preserving nature ensures sustainable hiking experiences. Whether you're a beginner or experienced hiker, Luxembourg offers memorable opportunities to immerse yourself in the country's natural beauty.

I often go to flea markets during weekends. A flea market in Luxembourg is a type of open-air market where individuals sell antiques, collectibles, secondhand goods, and various other items. It is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to browse through a wide range of merchandise, including clothing, furniture, books, artwork, and household items. Flea markets in Luxembourg offer a unique shopping experience and often have a vibrant atmosphere. They are a great opportunity to find hidden treasures, bargain for deals, and immerse oneself in the local culture.

I also enjoy Expat Day in Luxembourg. Expat Day is an annual event celebrating the international community living in the country, featuring cultural activities, networking opportunities, and information on expat resources. It aims to foster a sense of belonging and integration for expatriates in Luxembourg.

But there are days when I don't feel like doing much. During those times, I hop on a bus and head to a Shopping Center. I am a mall walker. I find joy in mall walking, simply strolling around without the need to buy anything. It's an enjoyable activity for me.

Celebration of Diversity
Luxembourg may be a small country, but its remarkable diversity shines through with over 70% of the population in Luxembourg City being foreigners. With people from 170+ countries calling it home, this incredible multiculturalism brings about an extraordinary advantage. In this melting pot of nationalities, there is little to no room for racism or the dominance of any particular group. Instead, a spirit of friendship and community thrives as people from different cultures and backgrounds come together harmoniously. Even within my team of 12 in Amazon representing 11 different countries. I have witnessed the peaceful celebration of national, religious, and community activities in Luxembourg. Here are some pictures capturing these vibrant moments of diversity from people around the world.

Youthful Exuberance
Another aspect I love about Luxembourg is the higher percentage of younger residents compared to other European countries. This is a result of its thriving economy and flourishing financial sector, which have enticed prestigious international companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, PayPal, the Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) and Many other to establish their presence here. This influx of renowned companies has attracted a large pool of talented young professionals, making Luxembourg a bustling hub of youthful energy. The city is often alive with parties and exciting events, where young professionals come together to celebrate and enjoy life.

Unparalleled Connectivity and Free Public Transport
Living in Luxembourg offers an advantage of exceptional connectivity. With just a few hours of train ride, you can effortlessly reach vibrant cities like Brussels, Paris, or various destinations in Germany. The convenience extends even further with quick flights to numerous European cities. For avid travelers, Luxembourg truly presents a paradise-like location, opening up a world of exploration and adventure at your doorstep. Since arriving in Luxembourg, I make sure to travel outside the country at least once a month, whether it's for a quick weekend trip or a longer getaway.
When it comes to traveling within Luxembourg, you'll be amazed by the diverse landscapes it has to offer despite its small size. From rolling hills and dense forests to picturesque valleys, there's something for every nature enthusiast. What sets Luxembourg apart is its unique perk of offering completely free public transportation, making it incredibly convenient, fast, and well-connected. So, you can freely explore the entire country without worrying about transportation costs. Luxembourg is the only country in the world to offer free public transportation. How cool is that?

You can experience the beauty of a road trip without the need for a car. In Luxembourg, a public bus offers comfort and stunning views, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenic landscapes. Why bother with a car when a bus can provide the same comfort and captivating sights?

I'm impressed by the trains in Luxembourg. Surprisingly, the second-class seats on a Luxembourg train often provide a level of comfort and cleanliness that can rival business class seats on a plane. You might think I'm exaggerating, but let me show you a picture of a second-class compartment on a Luxembourgish train and let you be the judge.

When it comes to daily commuting for work and groceries, I rely heavily on trams. They are incredibly well-connected within the city, providing a hassle-free commuting experience for urban dwellers. With zero traffic, punctuality, and frequent service throughout the day, I don't have to wait for hours if I miss one tram. The next one arrives within moments. I can simply plug in my favorite podcast with my AirPods, and voila, the tram is here, ready to take me to my destination.

Hallmark of Cleanliness
Luxembourg is incredibly clean, thanks to its small population and the commitment of its disciplined residents and diligent authorities. From the highways to the narrow neighborhood streets, the country maintains impeccable cleanliness. A friend once jokingly said that the streets of Luxembourg City are cleaner than many bedrooms, highlighting the extraordinary level of cleanliness of the entire country. It's truly impressive to witness such spotlessness wherever I go in Luxembourg.

Even in the most unexpected places, Luxembourg pays meticulous attention to detail, including its public toilets. They are maintained with exceptional care and often go above and beyond by providing additional amenities like sanitary pads, tampons, and contraceptives. I was amazed by the cleanliness and comfort of the public toilet I visited. It was so inviting and well-maintained that I couldn't even believe it was a public facility. Take a look at two separate public toilets below!

If a neighborhood street or even a public toilet can offer such a high level of cleanliness, just imagine the stunning beauty of the entire city. Luxembourg is always impeccably decorated and meticulously maintained. Here are a few random pictures that showcase the city's charm and elegance.

Savory Delights at Home and in Restaurants
Apart from physical activities like running or swimming, an important aspect of fitness is food. Luxembourg offers a fantastic selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The quality and freshness of fish and meat here are truly exceptional, although I do miss the diverse variety of river fish I used to enjoy back in Bangladesh. Nonetheless, the healthier alternative of sea fish satisfies my taste buds, and the high-quality meat and vegetables available here are a delight.

Luxembourg's remarkable variety of food options caters to all kinds of diets. Whether you're looking to start a new diet or stick to a specific eating plan, you'll find a wide range of ingredients to support your goals. The exceptional quality of these ingredients adds an extra touch of flavor and goodness to your homemade meals. This focus on high-quality ingredients promotes the joy of cooking at home, allowing you to create nutritious and delicious dishes that nourish both body and soul.

I recently embarked on a Keto diet journey with the goal of losing weight, and Luxembourg has been a culinary haven for me. With its wide range of options and abundance of fresh ingredients, I have successfully shed 10 kilograms. The variety and quality of homemade food in Luxembourg has turned me into a passionate advocate for cooking and eating at home.

Besides Homemade food, Luxembourg is a fantastic place to eat out. While some establishments may lean towards the higher end of the price spectrum, the overall experience of eating out in Luxembourg is a delightful one. When it comes to eating out, Luxembourg may not offer an extremely diverse international variety like London does, but it's diverse enough to make me happy. I even found a Bangladeshi restaurant here. Personally, I take immense pleasure in visiting local restaurants where the food is prepared with genuine love and care. Not only are the flavors exceptional, but the breathtaking views that accompany these dining experiences evoke deep conversations and a profound appreciation for life. On a recent vineyard hike, I had a chance to eat at a local restaurant. The incredible hike, tasty food, and stunning view made it a truly unforgettable experience that I will always treasure.

Some restaurants go beyond just offering a dining experience. They provide an immersive combination of food and team activities, like solving a thrilling murder mystery while indulging in a multi-course meal. It's a fantastic way to enjoy an outing and engage in team-building activities.

But I still cherish going to places where I can engage in deep and meaningful conversations with my friends or loved ones. I seek out locations that provide an inviting atmosphere and a sense of tranquility. Fortunately, Luxembourg offers many such places that perfectly fit the bill.

Sense of Community
As a significant portion of the population is young and hails from various parts of the globe, there is no dominance of a single nationality. People understand each other's struggles and strive to help, maintaining healthy and friendly relationships— at least, that's been my experience. I have never felt left out or unsafe here. Additionally, my friends from different countries have continuously visited us, making it a consistently enjoyable experience so far.

Challenges
Luxembourg, like any other place, is not without its challenges. I don't aim to provide an exhaustive list of the challenges faced by the country, but rather to share the challenges I have personally encountered. The high real estate prices make it difficult to find an affordable apartment due to the high rent. Winter, while not as severe as in countries like Canada, can still be challenging for South Asians like me. However, the beautiful summer weather makes up for it.

One more concern is the longer wait times for doctor's appointments compared to what I was accustomed to in Bangladesh. Nonetheless, the quality of treatment in Luxembourg is excellent, though it could be more prompt. Another drawback of living in a country like Luxembourg is that it can make you overly comfortable at times. I have grown accustomed to the disciplined system, low crime rates, and excellent social security. These days, even when I visit a larger city, I expect zero traffic, which is not always realistic, and I become impatient. Living in such a safe country can make you lower your guard, and I learned this the hard way when my wallet was stolen in Poland due to my own carelessness and the fact that I had become too accustomed to Luxembourg's safety standards.
Concluding Reflections
Relocating to Luxembourg was an impactful turn in my life, leaving behind the loved ones for new horizons. Thanks to Amazon, I found myself calling Luxembourg home since 2022. Little did I know, this decision would shape my life in ways I never imagined. The ups and downs were profound. Things became a bit unstable in Bangladesh without my presence. Losing my father and witnessing my family's emotional vulnerability tested my strength and forced me to mature beyond my years. I miss the familiar faces and the comfort of home, yet life has blessed me with new friendships and deepened connections with old ones. Through travel, I've discovered the world, and a better work-life harmony has allowed me to delve into self-reflection and personal growth. It has been a bittersweet experience, filled mostly with sweet memories and opportunities for emotional growth. Grateful for all that I have achieved and experienced, Luxembourg will forever hold a special place in my heart as a home where I felt secure and nurtured. And today, I truly believe, home is not just a place; it's a feeling.
